Your baby’s first teeth will begin coming through at around 6 months of age, and while it’s a super exciting time, there are some considerations that come along with your baby’s first teeth. As a parent, you obviously want what’s best for your child, but knowing how to properly care for your baby’s first teeth can prove daunting.

As soon as your baby’s first set of teeth begin to peek through their gums, we suggest calling in and scheduling an appointment to sit down with one of our dentists. During your appointment, the dentist will speak to you about the stage of oral development your child is currently in, and what you can expect in the coming months and years.

Your baby’s first set of teeth will last until they are around 6 or 7 years of age. At that time, they will begin falling out and being gradually replaced with their permanent teeth. When you hear your dentist refer to your baby’s primary teeth, they are talking about the temporary baby teeth your child has now. Secondary teeth refer to the permanent teeth they will get later.

Although your baby’s primary teeth will inevitably fall out and be replaced, they still require regular brushing and cleaning. By keeping your baby’s teeth healthy, you will promote healthy gums (and healthy habits), which will affect the health of their permanent or adult teeth later in life.

For some time, it will be your responsibility to care for your baby’s teeth until they are independent enough to brush on their own. Speak with our dentists about the right technique and some of the things you should be doing to promote a healthy smile in your child from the start.
